Citlali didn’t get a chance to duck out of sight when Ruby came in with her party. She yanked Citlali to an empty booth. A man who seemed to be with Ruby blocked them in as three other men sat opposite of them. Citlali’s heart thudded. Something felt wrong here.

“Lali, you’re going to have a drink with me,” Ruby said. It wasn’t an offer or a request. It was a command.

“I’m working,” Citlali replied. She needed to get out of this situation. She tried to catch a bouncer’s eye, but the man looming over her blocked her view.

“Yes, with me.” Ruby stared her down. “You always push me away, but you have all the time for that tacky bitch.”

Citlali shook her head. “Who are you talking about?”

“The bitch sniffing after you at your apartment.” Ruby clutched her arm hard enough for it to hurt.

The words registered to Citlali’s mind and got stuck there. “You’ve been to my apartment?” What the hell? How?

Ruby’s eyes darkened, hardened. “We’re going to a room, or my friends here are going to make sure you don’t have work anymore.”

Citlali glanced around. The man blocking them in stood and flashed a handgun tucked into his waistband. Her breath caught. Ruby yanked her out of the booth with a grin. Citlali had no choice but to follow her.

“Don’t do anything stupid. They’ve all got guns, and they’d all happily shoot everyone in here for me,” Ruby whispered in her ear. Citlali shuddered. “So, smile and take us to a room and no one has to get hurt.”

Citlali grunted, but forced out a smile. She couldn’t risk everyone’s lives. She’d have to figure out something else to do. For now, she moved toward the private rooms. She would have to get them away from all of the patrons and alert a bouncer in the hall. Worst case scenario, she could use the emergency button in the room, but she didn’t want to end up in a closed off area with armed men. With a glance over her shoulder, she tried to catch Daphne’s eye, but the four men closed rank around her and all she saw was black suits and scowls.
